Walkthrough Guide for Creating a Video+Data Project with RaceRender 3

RaceRender 3 offers templates and wizards to guide you through creating your projects, which is designed to be an easy and intuitive process.

This guide includes some extra options (noted in blue) and may make this seem like a longer process, but it can be quite fast and straight-forward to create and setup a project.


Prerequisites
  • You'll want to know where your video file(s) can be found on your computer. It’s a good idea to first copy your video file from your memory card onto your computer, as this may improve performance, and can be easier to locate later.
  • If your data file is not already in a compatible format (typically CSV, Text, NMEA, GPX, TCX, or FIT), you'll need to use your data system's software to export it into a compatible format. More Info

Steps
  • Start RaceRender 3 and go to the New Project Menu. If it doesn't appear when RaceRender starts, just click the "New" button at the top left of the main screen.
  • Click on one of the "Datalogger" templates on the New Project Menu, such as the "Datalogger - Simple" option.
  • Now click the “Add Video File” button, and go select the video file that you want to use for this project.
  • Click the “Add Data File” button to go select the data file to use.
  • Once you click "OK" there, RaceRender will give you a menu of data overlay templates to choose from. Simply click on the one that you like the best for your project.
  • It will then ask you which data visualizations to display. The defaults are already set based on the data available from the file you had selected, so it’s often possible to just click "OK" here without having to change anything.

  • You're almost done! You can now see and play your Video+Data project on the preview screen, but you’ll still want to at least synchronize their timing with each other.
  • The Project Setup Wizard should appear on the screen and present you with a few simple steps to follow to complete your project, such as trimming the main video, and then synchronizing the data (and anything else) to that. Follow these steps to trim and synchronize your project's input files. (Alternatively, the “Synchronization Tool” options under the “Input Files” list are another way to do it.)
  • More information on synchronization can be found in the RaceRender documentation (be sure to see the tips at the bottom)

  • Option: Much of "Step 3" on this Project Setup Wizard is optional, and includes the ability to add more data visualizations or to change the data overlay template that you had selected.
  • Option: On the main preview screen, you can click & drag to reposition the displays as you like, or double-click on them to open the properties box for more options (size, colors, style, etc).
  • Option: You can add additional media files at any time by clicking the "Add" button under the "Input Files" list (or drag & drop the file into RaceRender's window), then just position them on the screen as you like, and use the synchronization tools to match the timing to your project.

Output and Upload
  • Once you have your project to your liking, it can be rendered into an output file, and optionally uploaded to YouTube, by clicking the “Create Video” button.
  • Go to "Distribution Profile" and select your desired use. For example, "Internet / Upload: High-Def (720)" would use settings meant for creating high-definition 720p video for uploading to YouTube or elsewhere. By selecting one of these distribution profiles, you shouldn't need to adjust most of the other settings under it, unless you really want to.
  • Option: Click the "Use YouTube Uploader When Complete" box if you want RaceRender to upload the resulting video file to your YouTube account.
  • Click the "Create Video File" button to select an output file name and begin rendering. Rendering time will depend on the speed of your computer, and the picture size of the input video(s) and output video.


Option: Visualizing Other or Additional Data Channels

RaceRender's included templates and styles are great for displaying most common data channels, but you can also use it to display virtually any auxiliary, custom, or other data channels as well. The "Add" button under the "Display Objects" section on the right will open the Display Object Toolbox with many available styles, and then you can set the "Field" selection to your desired data channel and customize its display further. Option: Adding Additional Data Files

RaceRender supports the use of multiple data files, as well as multiple video files. The typical case is that users have just one data file, so the templates are designed to fit that best. Using multiple data files will rely on you to make a few adjustments...

To add another data file after you already have a primary data file in your project, add it by clicking the Input Files “Add” button to select the file (or dragging & dropping the file into the RaceRender window), but click “Cancel” in the template window that then appears (because you already have a primary data file with a template applied). At this point, there should be no visible changes on the preview screen. You can assign data visualizations to it in two ways:

1) Several data visualizations are included from the template you had selected for your primary data input, but might not be displayed if your primary data file didn’t have the right kind of data to supply them with. In either case, you can go to the Display Objects list and double-click on the display you want, then in the properties box that appears on the right, ensure that its “Active” box is checked so that it is displayed, and change the “Input” selection to use this new data file that you had added.

2) You can add additional data display objects to your project by clicking to select your new data file in the “Input Files” list, then clicking the “Add Display Object” icon above it… that’s the little blue monitor icon with a green ‘+’ plus on it, under “Input Files”. The display object toolbox should now appear, and your new data input file will be selected at the top of it. Click on the display object type you want to use, select the data channel you want to display (if applicable; appears at the top, on the right), and then select the display style that you want.

Repeat this for all of the data channels you want to show, and then use the Synchronization Tool options to align your second data file’s timing to match the other video and data in your project. Synchronizing the new data input file will only affect the data visualizations where the "Input" parameter is set to this data file.
