Note for Windows XP Users

Postby RaceRender LLC » Tue Apr 08, 2014 2:36 pm

As of April 8, 2014, Microsoft has stopped supporting Windows XP, meaning that there will likely be no more official security patches or other updates released for it. In addition to the possible security or usability concerns for users, this also strongly suggests that their developer tools could come to stop supporting XP builds as well, which would likely have a significant impact on RaceRender's ability to support XP in future releases.

Understanding that many people still do use XP and may continue to do so for a bit longer, new releases of RaceRender 3.x will attempt to continue supporting Windows XP SP3 for as long as deemed practical. However, at some point (date uncertain), it is expected that the minimum system requirements for any new releases will be increased to Windows Vista or higher. At that time, the previously existing releases of RaceRender should still work for XP users as-is, but those users would be unable to get the benefit of any newer releases and associated improvements and/or fixes, until they upgrade to a newer version of Windows.

RaceRender also offers some nice enhancements when it is used on Windows 7, or especially on Windows 8 / 8.1:

  • Potentially faster MPEG-4 and H.264 video decoders, often without needing to have QuickTime installed
  • .MTS and .M2TS video file support for AVCHD (requires Windows 8 or 8.1)
  • H.264 video output capability (limited "Main" profile on Windows 7; much improved on Windows 8/8.1)
  • 64-bit version is available, if using a 64-bit version of Windows 7 or 8/8.1 (it's often faster, and can utilize more memory if needed for larger/complex projects)
